What is Platelet Rich Plasma?

REPAIR: Platelet Rich Plasma: Platelets in your body aggregate when there is tissue damage and coagulate.

Shortly after the platelets break down and in so doing release a host of powerful growth factors that stimulate healing and repair of damaged tissues. Now there are treatments that use your own concentrated platelets in a simple office visit to repair and help painful joints heal. Platelets help heal tissue damage and are carried in the bloodstream. Because joints, tendons and cartilage have a poor blood supply there is no pathway to deliver the platelets needed from the blood to the damage. By drawing a small amount of blood the platelets are separated and concentrated. Using ultrasound imaging to guide the needle the platelets are injected into each area of the joint or damaged tissue where they are needed for repair. Platelets release a huge store of growth factors that jump start the healing process. Improvement can be rapid or take up to 14 days.

REPAIR PLUS: Platelet Rich Plasma + A2M: Alpha-2-Macroglobulin?

Alpha-2-Macroglobulin, A2M is a large protein found in blood plasma. Now there is a new technique where we can isolate and concentrate the A2M molecule from the plasma when we are doing PRP. A2M inhibits all classes of molecules that result in the damaging break down of cartilage in osteoarthritis pain. It is this “toxic” environment inside arthritic and damaged joints that leads to further damage and chronic pain. A2M is sued to “shut down” the toxic elements inside damaged arthritic joints and in so doing adds to the relief from joint pain.

Why is Ultrasound Imaging of the Musculoskeletal System When Doing Regenerative Medicine is Important?

Better information equals better outcomes from treatment. Osteoarthritis and other joint damage is not just a “cartilage disease”. Many structures in and around the joint such as the joint capsule, ligaments, tendons, fibrocartilage and articular cartilage are involved. Using ultrasound imaging at the time of the visit enables the gathering of “real time” images in and around painful joints. This specialized imaging REVEALS the causes of joint pain and the degree of damage. With that information in hand, the physician can specifically treat multiple targets using the ultrasound imaging to guide the needle taking a pin point and more precise approach to the treatment. Better precision and through treatment leads to better result.
