SUPARTZ Lubricating Injections for Osteoarthritis

Arthritis is among the most common causes of joint pain. When the smooth cartilage in a joint wears thin, the joint begins to “dry-out” resulting

in pain, reduced the range of motion and restricted activities. At Optimum Joint, we offer a long-lasting, naturally derived, FDA approved, safe and effective treatment injectable lubricant called SUPARTZ.

How do “lubricating” treatments work?

SUPARTZ is present in normal joint fluid and responsible for its lubricating
properties, which allows for the
cartilage surfaces of joints to glide upon each other in a smooth fashion. Arthritis interferes with smooth joint movement, causing inflammation and pain. By injecting SUPARTZ into a shoulder, hip or knee joint, the “lubrication” is restored, providing an ‘oil change’ for the joint. SUPARTZ has been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties, and in addition to improving current function, it also preserves future function y protecting the remaining cartilage in the joint. The injections, which are not painful, are administered in the office using continuous ultrasound guidance so you can watch the injection on a screen while it is taking place.

What are the expected results?

SUPARTZ has been shown to help alleviate arthritis symptoms for up to 6 months or more, and to delay the need for more aggressive procedures.

With each treatment, the function of the joint improves with the maximum effect experienced within one to three weeks after the last injection. Most patients, however, experience relief after the first injection.

Why is real-time live imaging so important?

Dr. Bilbool and her team are highly trained in ultrasound-guided injections. These procedures are performed in the office, at the time of your visit. Some of the common structures involved in joint pain may be as little as 2-3mm wide and therefore require a high level of precision to be accurate. In addition, when performing an injection, there are also structures that you want to avoid so you don’t knick or damage them on your way into the joint. The ultrasound machine provides live imaging in real time, to safely place injectable medications or treatments into or around the joint with laser-like precision.

Consider trying to hit a target blindfolded¾you may know the general direction but would not be certain if you have actually hit your target. With live ultrasound imaging, the targeted areas of pain are viewed in real time while the injection is taking place, guiding the needle with pin-point accuracy!
